British artist Matthew Ritchie is well known for his paintings and installations that take drawing as the basis for creating an entire system of meaning that considers surface as primary. The artist often works on site specific and public art projects that frame the seemingly chaotic energy of Ritchie’s mark making within the space of the installation. Only visible from above, the artist’s work, spreads across the confines of the Buena Vista Building rooftop. Like Ritchie’s other investigations into surface and systems of information, the entire structure of the drawing is impossible to view all at once. The overlapping compositions incorporate dotted lines, parabolic shapes and calligraphic curvatures, generating engaging visual tangents as the work poetically snakes across the angular roof of the building. The resulting composition functions as an abstract info-graphic, leading the viewer to mediate on how systems of knowledge and information form.
