For more than a decade, the Miami Design District has been on the forefront of South Florida’s art scene displaying a multitude of public artworks throughout the neighborhood and housing some of the city’s top cultural institutions.

But if you ever found yourself wanting to learn more about the striking pieces, the artists behind them and how they made their way to the neighborhood – here is your chance.

The Design District has officially launched its free public art tours taking place twice a month. The art tours coincide with the neighborhood’s Family Day activities on the second Sunday of each month (except October) at 2:30 p.m., and the last Wednesday of each month to coincide with The Market #atMDD at 6 p.m.

Leading the interactive and informational tours is Margery Gordon, the founder of Arts Encounters, an organization that creates unique experiences that enlighten and connect cultural enthusiasts. As an art critic, journalist and educator active in the development of Miami’s visual arts community for decades, Gordon is the perfect guide for a walk through of the Miami Design District, as she shares her expertise to illuminate the works on view.

There are currently more than 30 works of art to see in the Miami Design District, from centrally located works in public spaces, to the not-so-obvious works living amongst the shops of the MDD; the hour-long tours strive to give visitors a comprehensive look at how art and design elevate and enhance our public spaces.

No tour will ever be the same, as the neighborhood has such a diverse range of curated selections throughout its 18-block area. From John Baldessari’s “Fun (Part 1)” and “Fun (Part 2)” to Xavier Veilhan’s “Le Corbusier” along with the iconic site-specific Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome, the neighborhood is home to a massive assortment of contemporary artworks and beautifully designed, one-of-kind building facades that are highlighted on the tour.
