Body Building: A Marimekko Experience Produced by Fernando Calzadilla performed by the students of DASH
Marimekko Miami, a full-concept lifestyle showroom featuring the Finnish design house's bold and iconic designs, will collaborate with Miami's Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) to present a "bodybuilding" performance Saturday, March 13, 7:30 - 9:30 PM. Coinciding with the Design District's Art + Design Night, Marimekko Miami's storefront windows will set the stage for ten students in a live performance produced by Fernando Calzadilla, a renowned performance artist and teacher at DASH. The students will engage in a dynamic, unrehearsed exploration of architectural form and costume construction using Marimekko's signature fabrics.
Without scissors or a sewing machine, the students will work in pairs within the confines of the provided materials: clips, tape, staples, balsa wood sticks and fabric of various sizes. As one member of the pair focuses on design, the other will play the role of "bodybuilder"-their body operating as the support structure for the architecture/costume. Viewable from inside and outside of Marimekko's 3,157 square-foot store, the students' improvisations will be completely in-the- moment, a perfect warm-up for the coming Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 performance.
Says Cristina Dominguez, owner of Marimekko Miami: "Our aim is to bring art to everyday life with timeless design at affordable prices."
